Peacock Ore (Chalcopyrite)

from $6.00

These Chalcopyrite stones are bright and beautiful, with colors like those of a peacock's tail feathers. Very heavy for their size, the stones contain naturally-occurring copper and iron. Those metals change colors as they oxidize and mixed with each other and the other minerals present in the stones, this results in the exterior colors of chalcopyrite (kal-ko-PY-right). The unoxidized interior tends to be a brassy/gold color, sometimes seen in chips on the edges. Sometimes patches of silvery-gray, brassy gold, and even other minerals may occur.

This is a beautiful collectible stone, also great for learning and teaching about rock formations deep wthin the earth.

Mined in Mexico.

Size: from about 1.5 - 2.25 inches long, and from 1 to 2 inches wide. Pieces are chunky.
